AUDIO DELIGHTS FROM THE WORLD’S GREATEST RADIO STATION

KKDJ Coverage of Challenger Disaster – January 28, 1986

On the morning of Jan. 28, 1986, I was co-hosting KKDJ’s Dean & Don Show with Don Fischer and Gunnar Jensen. As Gunnar was wrapping up the 8:30 newscast, Don and I were monitoring the countdown of the Challenger launch on the NBC Radio Network. KKDJ wasn’t an NBC affiliate but for some reason Ma Bell sent the network through our studios en route to KMJ across the street.
It soon became apparent that Challenger’s countdown was going to perfectly coincide with the end of our newscast so we decided to put the launch on the air even if it made us guilty of bootlegging a national network. As Challenger climbed, Don and I flipped through the music library in search of the perfect song to follow the launch. Little did we know how strangely appropriate David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” would be.  This is how it sounded.

    Hi Dean,

I’ve been away and that is a good thing. Returning is also a good thing when I see you have added some nice clips from your extraordinarily fine and award winning Breakfast Club on KKDJ. Hope things are going well for you. Craig N.

This is awesome Mr Donde les Chi-Chi! I’d guess the little old chi-chi’s must be hanging a little low these days, but we need not go there…..I was so taken aback this week with the loss of our dearest David Bowie…he seemed immortal…and I felt it as dearly as if he had been a family member. AND, wtf, Keith Richards just keeps moseying along …someone the other day said that we needed to teach our kids how to take care of the planet so the Kieth Richards will still be able to enjoy it hundreds of years from now, when we’re all dead and gone…or hopefully flowing a around in the stardust surrounding the newest Super Nova in space, “Ziggy’s Place”. Astrologers take note…you might want to make a contest out of naming the next Super Nova…Bowie themed of cours….
